Advance Movie Screening: The Gift

6:58:00 PM

Thank you Freebie app! Alright, so you've seen all those annoying sponsored/suggested apps on Facebook that come in between your newsfeed posts right? (Not that we even care about half of what we see on there anyway, amirite?)

Some time two weeks ago one of them actually captured my attention. You can't really blame me though. The app had the word free in it! Freebie promised free offers in my area and I was instantly intrigued. After having downloaded it, all I had to do was sign up with an e-mail and I started off with what they call a "social capital score". The more social media accounts that you connect to the app, the higher your score gets! And of course, your follower count DOES affect the score.

The score helps you unlock all kinds of local freebies; I now qualify for two more freebies, but when I first downloaded the app the only freebie that showed up was an advance screening to the psycho-thriller movie The Gift. (This whole post is a definite spoiler-free zone)

The advance movie screening experience was actually pretty awesome. Everyone was extremely friendly, welcoming, and security wasn't daunting in the slightest. I actually think they would've let anyone in, claim ticket or not. They weren't very hush-hush about it since all the promo booths and cardboard cut outs were all up in our faces LOL.

We were given vouchers for free popcorn and a soda and asked if we wanted to participate in their interactive pre-movie experience. After giving them my twitter handle for it (and knowing barely ANYTHING about the movie), I received a tweet.
I confess... I have the worst short-term memory in the world. I actually HAD a locker back in middle school! They really got me good, I honestly couldn't stop staring at this tweet wondering why "my friend Gordo" seemed to think I had ignored him years ago. Such a creepy tweet and it took me a while before I realized OH ok, THIS is the interactive experience! Not too long after, I entered the theater and this showed up on the screen:

Did you catch the tweet? My boyfriend Ernesto and I had a blast tweeting our friend Gordo and waiting for our tweets and his responses to show up on the screen.

As my favorite movie genre, this psychological thriller really did NOT disappoint. I feel ashamed to say I've only ever see Jason Bateman in the movie Hancock (I know I suck), so I didn't get the hype when people were excited to see him take on such a serious role as Simon in this film. Without any hesitation, I'd like to say he delivered and gave life to his enigmatic character, and I bought every second of it.

I'd be lying to you if I said I didn't feel uncomfortable or on edge for the most part throughout the movie. We have to give immense credit to the director and protagonist of the movie (antagonist? Can't tell ya it's a spoiler!), Joel Edgerton who plays Gordo in the film. Joel performed just as phenomenally and gave the audience a chilling experience.

After the movie was over, the wonderful crew working at the booths gave each and every audience member a lovely gift from our friend Gordo ❤️️

I don't think there's any movie like this one out there right now. If you've seen and enjoyed Fatal Attraction, however, you'll definitely enjoy this one. The Gift will make you jump, scream, leave you thinking about your past and second guessing your future actions.

You can't miss out!  The Gift premieres next week, August 7.
