Florida Supercon 2015

1:28:00 PM

Two weekends ago, I had the privilege and the pleasure to work alongside many passionate volunteers at this year's Florida Supercon in Miami Beach. I remember scrolling through Facebook back in April and having seen the call for help from the Supercon page itself. I've had such rewarding experiences volunteering around Miami, but this one takes the cake.

My supervisor Mona was a ball of (stressed out) energy for the most part, and having arrived at the Miami Beach Convention Center at 8 AM really said something about how the rest of the weekend was gonna play out. I worked for 9 hours straight with an hour lunch break on my first day... and on the first hour of working, my boyfriend Ernesto and I were lucky enough to meet Paul Mcgann, the eighth doctor from the BBC series Doctor Who, who oh-so-casually asked Ernesto where he had to check in. It really paid off to wake up at 6 AM!

I really truly regret not taking pictures of all the beautiful costumes and cosplay that were present throughout the weekend, however you can enjoy them all HERE. After having worked and earning my Supercon badge, I was 100% determined to catch every panel and watch my favorite actors speak on stage.

That includes Brett Dalton from Marvel's Agents of Shield, Emilie de Ravin from LOST and Once Upon a Time, Paul Mcgann from Doctor Who, Karen Gillan from Doctor Who and Oculus, and lastly Hayley Atwell from Marvel's Agent Carter and Captain America.

A great advantage of having Supercon located at the convention center is that it's only a block away from Miami's famous Lincoln Road Mall. Regardless of the deadly heat that weekend, I'd say pretty much everyone who was there was having an overall great time. It's close by, the eateries are on a broad spectrum from casual to fancy, and the atmosphere is just welcoming and really what a tourist coming for Supercon would love to see from Miami.

On my walk, I decided to grab some Subway and a Starbucks drink... It was the first time that weekend that I was able to get some peace and quiet and escape the craziness of the con.

When it was time to go back to the convention center to watch Hayley Atwell, it was far too hot for me to walk back, especially on a full stomach. I rode my first Uber car back to the con and it was really a simple, easy transaction to make. If you aren't already an Uber user and would like a free $20 ride, you can use my code: ubermiamivibes. The most amazing part... a 15-minute ride is about $7-$9! Not sure why I didn't take one earlier.

Overall, such an amazing experience with friends and close ones. To see everyone be so passionate about dressing up as Sora from Kingdom Hearts or that little boyscout from the movie UP was just fascinating for me. I honestly can't wait for next year, and perhaps next time I'll exchange a word or two with these fabulous actors and actresses! Follow me on my journey... and thanks for reading xx
